Vikings and Other Early Medival Things

One of my many interests is the early medieval period, in particular the Viking age. This period is generally considered to have occurred between the end of the 8th century and the beginning of the 11th.

These are some links to sources I have found useful:

Vikings in general

  • Viking age long ships as seen by Scientific American
  • Carl Edlund has interests in the early periods
  • Centre for the study of the Viking Age at the U. of Nottingham
  • The Viking Society at University College London
  • Þora Sharpthoth
  • Viking resources for the re-enactor
  • Telling the time without a clock
  • Ravensgard Norse homepage
  • Viking (and early medieval) dress and clothing

  • Tablet weaving
  • Tablet weaving (again)
  • Footwear in the middle ages
  • Metallic trims
  • Old Norse language

  • FAQ for the Oldnorsenet a mailing-list that, unfortunately, is inundated with silly people with silly theories on the Vikings and the Viking age. Some good people were still try to make it worthwhile last time I had the time to subscribe, though.
  • Runes

  • Samnordisk rundatabas, unfortunately only for Mac and Windows, but perhaps one can port it to Linux or run it under Wine...
  • Runological projects at NCCH
  • Nytt om runer and the Runic Archives
  • Runrön Runologiska bidrag utgivna av Institutionen för nordiska språk vid Uppsala universitet
  • Medieval food and cooking

  • Medieval food and cooking a good collection of links to resources on this topic
  • Le Menagier de Paris
  • Some good articles about camping without a cooler, camp cooking, etc.
  • Serve It Forth, a good quarterly journal on Medieval cooking. Subscribe and help it grow!
